Libertad de acción, mapeados por demás extensos, historia atrapante relacionada con mafia, droga y traiciones, multitud de armas y vehículos, son palabras y términos que cualquiera relaciona con Gran Theft Auto al instante mismo de leer este párrafo.

El juego creado por Rockstar fue (y lo sigue siendo aún) tan innovador que su impacto en el ambiente del entretenimiento electrónico ha creado un ejemplo a seguir para algunos, o imitar para otros, que desafortunadamente son los más. Desde la aparición de la magnífica obra citada más arriba, hemos sido testigos de la presencia en el mercado de juegos por demás similares a GTA.

Cada uno de los desarrolladores de estos productos ha tratado de ponerle tintes personales a estos juegos, para diferenciarlos lo más posible al que se inspiraron o “apropiaron” las ideas. Muchos consiguieron con suerte su objetivo, en tanto algunos se quedaron en una burda copia de mala calidad.

Afortunadamente, los daneses de Deadline Games han conseguido un producto con personalidad propia en base a un interesante cóctel de ingredientes ya vistostodos ellos en otros juegos de diversos géneros. Por lo tanto, innovación no encontraremos, pero si podremos recordar a cada instante divertidas situaciones vividas con otros títulos.

La mayor proporción de esta mezcla se la lleva, obviamente, la saga GTA, que impone su famosa libertad de acción y exploración, uso de vehículos y presencia de secretos, minijuegos y saltos acrobáticos. Tiene también toques de Max Payne (uso de tiempo bala), Príncipe de Persia (rebobinar el tiempo y rebotar en las paredes) y Mafia (la historia y tipología de las misiones), todo esto ambientado en un ficticio pueblo mexicano próximo a los Estados Unidos. Para los amantes del cine, seguramente les será familiar a la película Érase Una Vez en México, de Robert Rodríguez y las dos que le antecedieron a ésta última de la trilogía.

Este pequeño pueblo mexicano, llamado Los Toros, nos trae muchos recuerdos de estas películas: barrios pobres con gente de escasos recursos, zonas ricas, el ambiente de intenso calor, los personajes que recorren las calles y sobre todo los matones y los intensos tiroteos de los que seremos testigos.

En Total Overdose encarnaremos el papel de Ramiro Cruz, la oveja negra de la familia, que debe vengar la muerte de su padre, ocurrida en circunstancias no muy claras. Para ello contaremos con el apoyo logístico de nuestro hermano gemelo, quien nos dará la pista clave que nos llevará a la ciudad de Los Toros: la mafia de esa ciudad pudo tener que ver con el deceso de nuestro progenitor.

Deberemos viajar hasta el lugar y hacer contacto con un lugareño, que nos ayudará a encontrar la verdad y descubrir a los culpables, desentrañando una inmensa red de corrupción, mafia y drogas. De paso, como buenos samaritanos que somos, trataremos de terminar con los negocios sucios del narcotraficante Papá Muerte, temible personaje del lugar.
